Pair of Large Antique Victorian Grand Cut Glass Lidded Bonbon Jars c1880
0628 Glass Bonbon Jars. A pair of late 19th century grand lidded glass jars. Typically these were used for bonbons or fancies and to show off to guests. The tall spired knops and heavy cutting are typical of the late Gothic revival around 1880 or so. The rim cutting is very elaborate with scotia and triple point cutting, this being very difficult to achieve and hence expensive, note how the feet also reflect the rim. There are no makers marks which is as you would expect for this period, glass unlike china was very, very rarely marked. There is some evidence that this style of cutting points to the Manchester region, although of course it could be readily done in other notable glass regions such as Stourbridge or Bristol. Great looking items which are bound to be noticed. Pretty much inevitably due to the vulnerability of the cutting they do have some chips to the points and edges, the worst damage is shown in the close up and one jar has fared better than the other. The feet seem to have suffered less with some minor chips. Overall through the effect is still very impressive as you can see. Height 36.5 cms (14 3/8 inches) with lids fitted. Width 22.7 cms (8 1/2 inches). If for any reason you are unhappy with your item please let us know as soon as possible, and we will do our best to put things right.
