Pair of Large Signed Antique 19thC Oil Formal Portraits Paintings of Man & Woman
This is a pair of Antique Post-Civil War 1871 Formal Portrait Oil Paintings on canvas of a Gentleman Farmer last name of Smith and his wife. They owned a large amount of land which he farmed between Springfield, Illinois and Jacksonville, Illinois and lived in a mansion out in the country. Both of these paintings are signed and dated in different places on each oil painting. I can make out the date but not the painters signature. Both paintings measure 22 across x 27 high & both matching frames measure 32 across x 36 high. Paintings are in good antique condition with no craquelure. Both frames are period with heavy gilt gesso design & in fair condition to good condition. The frame of the woman is missing a piece of wood at the top. Guarantee line: American School 19th Century. Extra Notes: This painting is not by Eastman Johnson. The signature could be Wunder or Munder but attempts to match it to a specific artist were not successful. This is a period portrait of a man of certain stature likely done by an American artist. Some small bits of Gesso missing and a few whitish dots on Lady Carolines painting (not sure if they are part of the painting). Overall both are in very good condition for age. George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron. (22 January 1788 19 April 1824), known simply as Lord Byron , was an English poet. Who became a revolutionary. In the Greek War of Independence. And is considered one of the historical leading figures of the Romantic movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest English poets. And remains widely read and influential. Among his best-known works are the lengthy narrative poems Don Juan. And Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. Many of his shorter lyrics in Hebrew Melodies. He travelled extensively across Europe, especially in Italy. Where he lived for seven years in the cities of Venice, Ravenna and Pisa. During his stay in Italy he frequently visited his friend and fellow poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Later in life Byron joined the Greek War of Independence. Fighting the Ottoman Empire. And died of disease leading a campaign during that war, for which Greeks. Revere him as a national hero. He died in 1824 at the age of 36 from a fever contracted after the First. And Second Siege of Missolonghi. His only legitimate child, Ada Lovelace. Is regarded as a foundational figure in the field of computer programming. Based on her notes for Charles Babbage. Byron’s illegitimate children include Allegra Byron. Who died in childhood, and possibly Elizabeth Medora Leigh. About Lady Caroline Lamb and Byron. From March to August 1812, Lady Caroline embarked on a well-publicized affair with Lord Byron. He was 24, she 26. The pair had first met in the Holland House. Originally known as Cope Castle, five miles south-west of London. She had spurned the attention of the poet on their first meeting, subsequently giving Byron what became his lasting epitaph when she described him as “mad, bad, and dangerous to know”. Lady Caroline Lamb claimed she coined the phrase after her first meeting with the poet at a society event in 1812, and this was later reported by her friend, Lady Morgan (in her memoirs), although, as Paul Douglass notes in his biography, there is no contemporary evidence to prove Lady Caroline actually created the famous phrase at the time. Byron’s response to her enticements (she wrote him a fan letter) was to visit her because of her high social status as a niece of the Duchess of Devonshire, and then to pursue her passionately. Lady Caroline and Lord Byron publicly decried each other as they privately pledged their love over the following months. Byron referred to Lamb as “Caro”, which she adopted as her public nickname. After Byron broke things off, her husband took the disgraced and desolated Lady Caroline to Ireland. The distance did not cool Lady Caroline’s interest in the poet; she and Byron corresponded constantly during her exile. This spurred increasingly public attempts to reunite with her former lover. Matters came to a head at Lady Heathcote’s ball in early July 1813, when Byron publicly insulted Lady Caroline, who responded by breaking a wine glass and trying to slash her wrists. She did not seriously injure herself, due largely to the prompt intervention of her mother-in-law, and it is most unlikely that she had any suicidal intentions; but polite society was scandalised, and her mental stability was called into question. Byron himself referred to it as a theatrical performance: “Lady Caroline performed the dagger scene” a reference to Macbeth. Lady Caroline’s obsession with Byron would define much of her later life, as well as influencing both her and Byron’s works. They would write poems in the style of each other, about each other, and even embed overt messages to one another in their verse. After a thwarted visit to Byron’s home, Lady Caroline wrote Remember Me! Into the flyleaf of one of Byron’s books. He responded with the hate poem; Remember thee! Till Lethe quench life’s burning stream; Remorse and shame shall cling to thee, And haunt thee like a feverish dream! Ay, doubt it not. Thy husband too shall think of thee! By neither shalt thou be forgot, Thou false to him, thou fiend to me! Her cousin Harriet by then Lady Granville. , with whom Lady Caroline’s relationship had deteriorated after childhood, visited her in December 1816 and was so incredulous at her unrepentant behaviour that she ended her description of the visit in a letter to her sister with: I mean my visits to be annual. This pair is very large at 42.25″ x 28.5″ each, meant to be a focal point, or separate to flank something even larger. Also could be hung horizontally. They’re painted on vintage boards and frames from an estate, the frames are chrome and have two holes in the top of each for hanging. They’ve got a vintage mid century modern look and feel, with light wear and aging/patina on the frames for an authentic mcm vibe. I used 24k gold leaf and lots of rich tones to complement fine eclectic and retro interiors. These are some of the last I have available, and the largest, and the only pair for now. Paintings are newer, are each signed, created with texture, and they are sealed. Frames have some marks and scratching but overall present very well as you can see from the photos. Please reach out with questions. I have lowered the price and removed the offer option.
