Antique Staffordshire A Pair of Large Dalmation Dogs, England, mid-1800's
The male dog is slightly larger and taller than the female. Male dog: 7 1/4″ (18.5cm) tall, and 4″ x 2 5/8 (10.2cm x 6.7cm) at the base. Female dog: 7″ (18cm) tall, and 4″ x 2 3/8 (10.2cm x 6.2cm) at the base. Both dogs are in excellent condition in accordance with age. There is some age appropriate crazing, some shrinkage lines and some firing flaws produced from the old wood burning kilns. You can also see a faint hairline crack on the male dog’s back, along with other manufacturing flaws such as firing lines, pits, paint smudges, small debris on the bottom and light paint wear on the muzzles. The red arrows point out these small imperfections that are typical for a true Staffordshire piece. Please see photos for details. These type of flaws are actually considered to be unique characteristics of the piece and do not diminish the value. “Staffordshire” is a generic term for brightly decorated white clay figurative pottery made in the Staffordshire area from 1840 until around the turn of the 20th century. The pieces made varied from human form figurines to a variety of animals, especially dogs. At the time, these pottery figures were inexpensive wares, made for the modest parlors of country cottages rather than pricey art work for noble mansion houses. The pieces were produced in make-shift kilns by relatively unskilled labor (mostly women and children), on a piece/rate basis. Original 19th and early 20th century “Staffordshire” figurines were very rarely marked by these’mom and pop’ operations. Among all the Stafforshire dogs – poodles, pugs, pointers, foxhounds and more, spaniels were the most common and Dalmatians the most rare. Amazingly, this pair of unsophisticated looking, but adorable dalmatians have survived over 150 years without being damaged or separated! Although the dogs look similar, there are many small differences that can be noted if you look at them long enough. The male dog is slightly larger, and the female dog has larger spots and a shinier, thicker glaze. The male dog’s almost cross-eyed face would make anybody smile, even on their gloomiest of days! These Dalmatians have many of the indicators noted on early Staffordshire figurine pieces. Paint and glaze that has dripped down the from the side to the bottom edge of the base. Small, crudely made firing holes on the bottom of the base. Seam lines at the back and chest from the press mold that indicates a time period of 1840 – 1880. Worn down gold trim with it’s dull shine. The decoration covers the entire body (20th century models had only the front side decorated). Very fine, clean crazing; not intentionally darkened to fake the age. The male dog shows a bit more age, perhaps because it has a thinner coat of glaze. Tiny brown spots that are under-glaze and only appear after the passage of many, many decades. These two rare Staffordshire Dalmatian dogs were part of a life-long Staffordshire collector’s estate. They were kept in a dedicated display cabinet and were well cared for a very long time. These Dalmatians would make a great addition to any collection of Staffordshire pottery figurine! They would also make great starter pieces for the collector of tomorrow. These dogs are described as objectively as possible. If an item has a scratch or ding, I will tell you. All pictures are of item to be sent. Please inquire if you have any questions concerning an item.
