Wonderful Perfect Pair of Large Poudre Blue Paul Milet Sevres Ormolu Vases 1910 10 1/2. Antique Treasures from Paris to your Door. A large and impressive pair of wonderful Poudre Blue Paul Milet vases pair with ormolu mounts, ca. Perfect condition for both vases of rare large size, very small losses of bronze gilding. Bronze bases marked with « G » (for « left ») and « D » (for « right ») « 3 », pierced for mount. Extremely detailed and fine bronze heavy floral garlands. Rare and highly decorative for a refined classical home. Milet’s works use often gilt metal mounts before WW1. Metal, then chromed, was still a little used until the 1930s and disappeared afterwards. MP Sèvres mark around 1900 at the time he got a gold medal at the Centennial Exposition Universelle in Paris. Mark after a trial initiated by the Sèvres National (Porcelain) Manufactory. The vases and decoratives objects made by Paul Milet at the turn of the 19th century can be considered as a transition between the famous (but too neglected) works of his father, who became several major awards (bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1867, silver medal in Anvers, 1885, gold medal at the World Exhibition 1889) and his later works of the 1920s, followed up by his son, Henri, until and after WW2. The Milets were a true dynasty. The uncle of Paul, Ambroise Nicolas Milet (6.12.1820-18.9.1916) , left his village in Normandy, well-known for its ceramics production since the medieval times, and joined the Imperial Sèvres Manufactory in 1852 until 1884. Highly gifted, he was then director of the ovens and pastes. He called to Sèvres his youngest brother, (Félix-) Optat, father of Paul. Despite the fact he was employed by the Sèvres factory, Optat opened his own workshop in Sèvres in 1866, where he employed up to fifty workers. His chemical research on colors was highly praised and he worked with first rank artists and industrials: Clément Massier (Vallauris), Charles Field (Haviland) and most of the Art Nouveau ceramics great artists. The enthusiastic report of the Jury of the 1889 Exhibition, written by Loebnitz, especially notes the first appearance of two Flambé Turquoise enameled vases. This discovery followed the first vases with a rediscovered copper enamel : the great Flambé Red “flambés de Chine” called “sang de boeuf” (oxblood) in 1885. The new colors were best sellers at Optat’s (and then Paul’s) elegant shop of the 36 avenue de l’Opéra in Paris where wealthy visitors from the international aristocracy (English, Russian) and from the United States bought unrivaled Objects of Art now highly valuable Antiques. Other extremely rare colors of the Milets are very praised : Cloudy and Poudré Blue, Tortoise Shell. Paul Milet was a great artist (please check in museums or auctions websites). His beautiful works, especially before WW1, will remain a lasting asset and an excellent investment. Height : 10 1/4 (26,8 cm). Diameter (largest) : 5 3/4 (14,5 cm). Base : 4 1/2 (11 cm). Weight : 2 133 g + 2 029 g (4,16 kg). _gsrx_vers_841 GS 7.0.16 (841).
