Up for consideration is a fine pair of 19th century or earlier Large Mirrored Back Etched wall Sconces. The Sconces measure 25 inches in height by 14 inches in width. Each piece of mirror is beveled on the edge and contains either a scene with birds or floral with kidney shaped cartouches. The center back plate has two mythological dragons purched on both sides an urn. The mirrors are inserted with leaded trim… And held on a solid carved piece of wood as a back framing… There is some strapping on the back… These are really quite remarkable pieces of which you don’t see that often in America… Condition: light discoloration to the mirrors… The bronze arms on one spin around so an elastic band has been used to create a rubber seal so that arms don’t slide to the left or right… There is a crack to the small portion of both mirrors at the bottom of each sconce… Over the years instead of putting a rubber washer between the mirror and the glass to create friction and stop the movement of the arms “rubber deteriorates over time” previous owners probably tightened them to much. Summary: these sconces are are larger than one would expect in a regular house… Because they are mirrored they can just about fit into any such decor… They are the real McCoy 19th Century Venetian Mirrored back wall sconces… Great to decorate with… B e s t R eg a rd s. This is a pair of Antique Post-Civil War 1871 Formal Portrait Oil Paintings on canvas of a Gentleman Farmer last name of Smith and his wife. They owned a large amount of land which he farmed between Springfield, Illinois and Jacksonville, Illinois and lived in a mansion out in the country. Both of these paintings are signed and dated in different places on each oil painting. I can make out the date but not the painters signature. Both paintings measure 22 across x 27 high & both matching frames measure 32 across x 36 high. Paintings are in good antique condition with no craquelure. Both frames are period with heavy gilt gesso design & in fair condition to good condition. The frame of the woman is missing a piece of wood at the top. Guarantee line: American School 19th Century. Extra Notes: This painting is not by Eastman Johnson. The signature could be Wunder or Munder but attempts to match it to a specific artist were not successful. This is a period portrait of a man of certain stature likely done by an American artist.
